Cauliflower Hot ‘Wings’

Apparently I’ve been living under a rock because until recently I never knew how amazing and versatile cauliflower is! A while back I was searching for a vegan substitute for hot wings and kept running into recipes using cauliflower. I kept thinking to myself “wait, what…cauliflower?” I was pretty skeptical to say the least, but after trying it out I became a believer. This definitely satisfies my hot wing cravings!

Now you’re probably not going to fool anyone into thinking these are actual chicken wings, but they still have that spicy, tangy goodness we all know and love, are super fulfilling and are a lot healthier than the real deal. They’re crispy on the outside, chewy and tender on the inside, and are just plain delicious. So if you’re craving a guilt-free version of a classic, or if you’re like me and opt not to eat meat then try these. Your taste buds will thank you.

  • 1/2 head of cauliflower
  • 1 cup chick pea flour (I prefer chick pea for this, but any flour you like is fine)
  • 3/4 cup + 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/3 cup of your favorite hot wing sauce (I use Louisiana Original Wing Sauce)
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted

1. Preheat oven to 425°F.

2. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

3. Chop and separate the cauliflower into bite sized florets.

4. Combine the flour, water and spices in a bowl and stir until a thick batter is formed.

5. Pour the cauliflower pieces into the bowl and toss until well coated with the batter. Place on the baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes or until crispy, turning halfway through.

6. While the cauliflower is in the oven, prepare the wing sauce by mixing the hot sauce and melted butter together in a large bowl.

7. Toss cooked cauliflower pieces with sauce and put it back in the oven for about another 5 minutes or until just browned. Enjoy!

Brandi June 2, 2016 - 11:53 pm

Where do I begin? Let me just say, I tried your mac’n’xheese recipe and fell in love with it! But THIS… This right here, Ms. Kim, has changed my entire life! I have been on my transition to Vegan since the beginning of the year, and have been struggling (I’ve been gluten-free due to Celiac Disease and cannot cook to save my life?). Every recipe I have tried just tasted like it was missing something (my entire fam is from Louisiana- so I’m extremely picky- I need FLAVOR). I honestly love how tasty AND simple your recipes are (don’t require a lot of time, nor too many ingredients, plus the serving size isn’t for an entire army?, and taste phenomenal). With recipes like this, not only can I accomplish my goal (become Vegan before the end of the year), but I don’t feel deprived when everyone around me is tearing up some food. I can be in the mix with my “hot wings” and fries, not missing out on anything!!! THANK YOU for sharing your cooking skills with people like me (love to eat, can’t cook, and not trying to be in the kitchen all day)! ??❤️

Cristal June 1, 2016 - 11:14 pm

Girl. This was good!!!!

MS B January 29, 2017 - 4:47 pm

@ Brandi, LOL! I 2nd your last sentence. This is so me – not the best cook, but do love to eat, and hate spending all day or night in kitchen, this recipe here I can do and is a keeper.

This recipe sparked my curiousity and although I was a little hesistant I decided to try it out and I must admit these are awesome!! It’s hard to create recipes that replace actual meat and this blew my mind. Thanks for sharing!

Kimyetta June 22, 2016 - 7:57 pm

Delicious, my teenager enjoyed them too!!!

Renee May 19, 2016 - 10:00 pm

I tried it today and I loved, loved, loved this recipe. I turned it into wraps with Peta bread. My husband who loves Spicey foods and me too. Just couldn’t get enough of it. Only had a problem with one pan. I used my cast iron but not enough cooking spray. But it came out and I just combined it with the baking dish. It was the best replacement ever. I used the pieces that crumbled mixing it in with creamy tofu as a topping.. just a smash of blue cheese. Thank you. Goooooo vegan!

Casjmier March 7, 2015 - 1:16 am

You sure can fool a lot of people into thinking it’s some boneless wings…lol. But anyway I do eat cauliflower with cheese but I never tried it like this.
